The Play. Robert O'Hara's semi-autobiographical play that explores sexuality, childhood, and identity through a series of vignettes and tells the story of Sutter, a young gay black man on an outrageous journey to understand himself and the world around him. The paly explores how we talk about human desire and racial stereotypes.
The Director Devin Franklin wanted an off-kilter, skewed world where everything is a bit “f %#*ed up”
He also wanted a “theatrical“ space that could transform deftly so we can pop from one scene to the next instantly. We move through Sutter’s childhood home, his church, various bars, motel rooms, an academic conference and finally his grandmother's nursing home.
